As part of a non-profit organisation with a mission of developing people through the outdoors, Outward Bound Vietnam (OBV) was established in 2016 and is part of the global network of Outward Bound Schools in 35 countries. OBV’s mission is to help people recognise their true potential through experiential learning programmes that include adventure, challenge and service through a journey of self-discovery in the outdoors.

THE ROLE

The Assistant Director (AD) / Deputy Director (DD) of Training & Operations will be part of OBV’s leadership team responsible for maintaining high standards of operational excellence in overseeing all training programmes and operations of OBV across our current 2 training bases.

The successful candidate will report to the Executive Director to oversee systemic operations that support OBV programmes and staff training. OBV’s Heads of Operations and Senior Manager of Safety & Risk Management will report to the AD/DD Training & Operations. The incumbent will be responsible for working with OBV’s leadership team to enhance policies and systems that ensure smooth operations of programmes and trainings at OBV’s training bases as well as outbound programmes.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

A. Safety & Risk Management

  • Ensure adherence to all local operating procedures, national/local safety policies in the running of Operations;
  • Enhance emergency management policies/procedures at OBV;
  • Ensure OBV’s staff handbook/field safety manual and regulations are current and updated as necessary;
  • Continually monitor and assess hazards; train staff to manage risks appropriately and intentionally;
  • Supervise the Operations team at OBV;
  • Lead in critical incident management & response systems, safety related training as well as incident reporting;
  • Develop and participate in an emergency management systems with the Operations Team and OBV HQ team;
  • Lead Table Top Exercises and Ground Deployment Exercises (Scenario Planning) to enhance safety management protocols and standard operating procedures;
  • Consistently role model and teach best practices of self-care and safety attentiveness;
  • Raise safety related concerns to the Executive Director/Director of OBV;
  • Ensure the quality and timeliness of the incident reporting system for all incidents and accidents;
  • Sign off on the operational competencies of all instructional staff before they are deployed in the field as instructors;
  • Participate in OBV’s Risk Management Committee Meetings, prepare key strategic presentations pertaining to safety and risk management.

B. Knowledge & Skills

  • Prior Outward Bound (OB) work experience and knowledge of OB programmes is an advantage;
  • In depth knowledge of wilderness-based education and Outdoor Education (OE) programmes;
  • Expedition experience in and/or familiarity with wilderness programmes;
  • Ability to problem solve, innovate, prioritise and manage multiple asks successfully within tight timelines and high stress;
  • Strong management skills and task follow-through resulting in measurable success;
  • Very strong and effective communicator, both written (English) and oral (English);
  • Demonstrated successful working relationships with peers and other management staff;
  • Proven Leadership track record, including supervising a team of competent/instructional staff;
  • Strong personal motivation, initiative, follow through, flexibility and commitment;
  • Detail oriented with good organisational skills and ability to prioritise.

C. Education & Relevant Work Experience

  • General Bachelor degree, or tertiary qualifications related to the field of OE, Environmental or Outdoor Adventure education;
  • Experienced in planning and leading multi-day OE residential and expeditionary programmes for youths and adults/corporates;
  • Experienced in the planning and leading of instructional staff trainings;
  • Minimum 7 years management experience in the fields of outdoor adventure education or outdoor recreation;
  • Holds a current Wilderness First Responder, CPR, Water (e.g. kayaking, rafting) and Land-based (e.g. hiking, campcraft & navigation) competencies;
  • Other certifications relevant to the job can be sent in with the job application (e.g. OE related hard-skills and soft-skills certifications);
  • Ability to participate in vigorous physical activity in a wilderness setting, including running, backpacking, swimming, paddling, climbing and abseiling.

D. Other Duties:

  • Undertake other duties as needed and in any ad hoc tasks as assigned by immediate Supervisor and / or Management;
  • Maintain confidentiality in all matters relating to the business activities of OBV and its staff;
  • The incumbent is required to travel as and when required to represent OBV for official work matters.
