Outward Bound Vietnam (OBV) is recruiting Senior Instructors!

Join the instructional team and be based at our 2 training bases in either Quy Nhon or Ha Long. Our instructors use stimulating wilderness environments to guide youths and adults to create life-changing experiences. Through expert facilitation, they develop positive attributes, values and mindsets that will equip our clients and participants with valuable life skills through outdoor education. The Senior Instructor’s job role is an extension of the instructors’ job. Importantly, Senior Instructors are expected to be exemplars in outdoor education course delivery and must possess a wide range of experience in the outdoor education industry.

We are looking for someone who is an excellent outdoor camp facilitator/instructor, has youth and corporate programming experience and possess a wide range of outdoor qualifications. Ideally, you will be a role-model for youths and our local staff, an avid outdoor enthusiast, trekker and/or sea kayaker who is comfortable working outdoors in a rapidly developing country in Asia. You will be a role model within the center that other staff can look up to, ensuring high standards are met in every aspect of their work. Our Senior Instructors can be relied upon to drive program excellence, raise training delivery standards, and provide leadership and support to our instructional teams, clearly leading by example.

As OBV continues to build our capacity, there will be opportunities for you to lead field programs, mentor junior instructors and our trainees. Thus, you must be a person who values feedback and can communicate positively across cultures. We prefer candidates with previous Outward Bound experience. We deliver both residential and expedition-style, outcome-focused programs. Our programs can be 3-10 days long. Vietnam is a vibrant and rapidly developing country with nearly 100 million citizens. OBV is still building capacity, so there is plenty of opportunity for delivering staff training, exploration, and development of new sites, activities, and areas.

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Conduct self with utmost professionalism as a staff of Outward Bound
  • Work with co-instructors to design and implement outcome-focused courses that are aligned with Outward Bound philosophy.
  • Take on Program Coordinator role when required; do Initial medical screening for the incoming course participants whenever taking the Program Coordinator role
  • Ensure physical and emotional safety of students and co-instructors during the course
  • Passionately mentor junior instructors and support their growth
  • Oversee kayak / rock-climbing / challenge ropes course programs as an  OBV trained resource expert
  • Conduct staff training, which may include high ropes, climbing, sea-kayaking, powerboat in accordance to the relevant training syllabus and Safety Standards
  • Lead/Plan New training area reconnaissance and program routes development; this may include staff expeditions
  • Ability to complete all paperwork and administration independently
  • Respond to emergency situations in the field during programs and or whenever the need arises

Preferred Experiences:

  • This job opening is open for Expats only.
  • At least 5 years of experience with youth and corporate program design and delivery
  • Has worked as an instructor at other Outward Bound schools
  • Experience leading school students on overnight expeditions
  • Extended sea-kayaking experience and technical competencies
  • Multi-day backpacking experience on uneven terrain
  • Experience and technical competencies in high ropes, navigation, rock climbing

Essential Qualifications:

  • Current Wilderness Advanced First Aid
  • Lifesaving qualification / Bronze Medallion water competencies
  • Kayak and/or challenge ropes course competencies
  • And a great personality

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Swimming coaching experience
  • ACCT Level 2 ropes course certification, or equivalent
  • Duke of Edinburgh International Award experience
  • LNT Master Educator
  • Degree in Outdoor Education or similar field
  • Driving License / Motorbike License
  • Living or working experience in Asia or tropical climates
