Position Summary

The Training Development Manager is part of the OBV middle management/leadership team and is responsible for maintaining a high standard of excellence in the management and execution of training and development of OBV instructional staff to ensure that all instructional staff are competent and qualified to conduct Outdoor Education (OE) programmes in OBV.  The incumbent has to manage the OBV training school programmes to on-board and operationalize new trainees as well as plan for continuous training for Lead, Mentor, and Assistant instructors.

This position is primarily responsible for supporting the Head of Operations (OBV) to coordinate Staff Training development programmes. This includes but is not limited to ensuring trainings are delivered according to specified design and curriculum, staff adherence to local and national operating procedures and safety standards, managing programmes, supervising training, and evaluating training development modules. This is a full time role and the incumbent reports to the Head of Operations at whichever OBV base he/she is located.

Key Functions

Training & Development

  • Create, and implement strategies and systems to support the efficient, safe and effective delivery of field programmes defined by current environment
  • Participate in achieving annual desired outcomes for training development, field operations and report progress of staff development
  • Provides systemic planning and leadership for staff training before, during and after training programmes
  • Cross collaborate with other teams on projects related to organizational priorities
  • Spearhead Training and Development of new staff and continuous training
  • Together with OBV HR, the Training Manager will be responsible for recruiting and selecting trainee instructors, performing training needs assessments, designing, and delivering curriculum and learning materials
  • Managing all phases of OBV training programs, including overseeing the instructor authorization process
  • Work closely with the OBV Operations team to lead in developing hard and soft skills, Outdoor Education experience, and knowledge of all Operational Staff
  • Undertake training needs analysis to determine training requirements for staff
  • Maintains summary records of all staff competencies
  • Direct structured learning experiences and monitor their quality results
  • On-board new hires to OBV and conduct orientation sessions as well as deliver training courses, both for new staff intakes, and existing staff
  • Assess training effectiveness and regularly appraise ongoing programs to review incorporation of hard skills and soft skills
  • Work with external partners and organisations in relationship to collaborations pertaining to training and development
  • Mentoring and coaching staff members within the training team which would include goal setting and performance reviews, managing rosters, coordinating training, compiling reports and training incident data
  • Provide leadership to all direct reports to achieve strategic goals, establish team direction and vision and to instil a positive culture based on Outward Bound philosophies and congruent with OBV core values, vision, and mission
  • Work closely with OBV Human Resources to support succession planning activities and employee wellbeing initiatives
  • Role model senior staff behaviour, including building a positive organisational culture

Health & Safety

  • Manage the safe delivery of outdoor education staff training programmes
  • Ensure that all training programs are delivered per OBV safety and quality requirements
  • Ensure field and administrative staff follow all relevant risk management, health and safety legislation and standards; and all relevant OBV risk management, health and safety policies and procedures
  • Keep abreast knowledge of external standards applying to training, safety, and quality in Outdoor Education / Activities
  • Participate in emergency on-call system for field programmes, when necessary
  • Participate in critical incident response systems
  • Assist in internal Safety Reviews & Audits
  • Create operational plans to be approved for safe conduct of Instructor trainings

Fiscal Management

  • Plan and manage training development budgets for staff training and development

Other Duties

  • Undertake other duties as needed, including providing cover for the Operations Manager when needed, Senior Instructor’s duties, and spearheading corporate course initiatives, any ad hoc tasks as assigned by Immediate Supervisor and / or Management
  • Maintain confidentiality in all matters relating to the business activities of Outward Bound and its staff
  • The Employee is required to travel as and when required

Required Professional Experience/Qualifications

  • This job opening is open for Expats only.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field of Outdoor, Environmental or Experiential education.
  • General Degrees may be considered if there is work experience in the outdoor education industry
  • Appropriate hard and soft skill competencies (e.g. First Aid/Wilderness Medical First Responder, Challenge Ropes Course Certifications, Kayaking Competencies, Mountain Leadership Leader certifications)
  • Minimum 6 years management of supervisory experience in the field of experiential education or outdoor recreation
  • Experience leading a team of instructors/practitioners and managing staff conflicts
  • Experience in planning training programmes, leading training and development of hard and soft skills for Outdoor Practitioners
  • Experience in managing/administrating experiential youth/corporate programmes, executing programme delivery, staff training
  • Experience facilitating group learning in outdoor adventure programmes
  • Able to demonstrate and role model and display core values of Outward Bound Schools and OBV
  • Knowledge and Experience of running OE and/or Outward Bound programmes is advantageous
  • Strong organizational skills and good communication in English, both verbal and written
  • Demonstrate sound judgment, ability to work independently, and the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities effectively under stressful conditions
  • Capacity to manage conflict, including giving, receiving and applying feedback, holding oneself and colleagues accountable to improve and broaden skills, knowledge and compassion
